E-bikes & fire protection: How safe are the batteries?

E-bikes and pedelecs are gaining momentum, both for leisure and as company bikes. But what about the safety of their "heart", the lithium-ion battery? How fire-hazardous are energy storage devices, and what fire protection solutions are available?

Lithium-ion batteries have established themselves as energy storage devices in electromobility: they score with a high energy density at relatively low weight, a short charging time and a long service life. In principle, they are safe, but under certain circumstances, the batteries can have an accident, i.e. explode. Then violent reactions occur in the form of fires, in which dangerous toxic and corrosive harmful gases are emitted. The cause of such a fire is often the wrong charge, e.g. deep discharge or overcharge.
Larger companies, DIY stores and bicycle stores are therefore increasingly relying on targeted fire protection by keeping batteries safely under lock and key. Harmful dusts and particles are retained and the escape of solids, liquids and flames is prevented. Thanks to the integrated thermal management system, the outer walls hardly heat up at all and the defective battery can be transported away in compliance with ADR, i.e. in accordance with the Convention on the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road.
