De Walvis | Amsterdam, Netherlands

Hip design in the historic island district: on Bickerseiland in Amsterdam, KAAN Architecten have completely modernised the De Walvis office building from the early 1960s. De Walvis (Dutch for "the whale") was architectural avant-garde in the Sweet Sixties, but it could no longer keep up with today's standards. So the building was gutted down to the foundation walls and revitalised from the ground up. The De Walvis now looks slimmer and more stylish - the perfect workplace for technology and media companies.

And the inner values are now also up to date, keyword "structural fire protection": with our section-forming fire curtain ➥ Fibershield®-S, which unfolds "around the corner" in case of fire and otherwise remains inconspicuous in the background.
